The Entrepreneur

Growing businesses is in my blood. I grew up with a father who ran four substantial businesses and a mother with a string of shops. During my childhood everything I did was about making money. Whilst some kids had paper rounds, by the time I was 10 I had a small flock of sheep! My father used to pay me for any work I did for him in the business with that money I bought more sheep to produce lambs each year which I sold in the local livestock market. That's how I developed my business skills at an early age!

Education

On leaving school I completed a three year National Diploma in Agriculture at Aberystwyth. I continued my education at Seale Hayne College in Devon where I obtained a Higher National Diploma in Rural Management, before finally completing my education with a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester.

Home

I was born in and have lived in the Shropshire/Mid-Wales area most of my life. Currently, I live in Shrewsbury overlooking the river Severn with my wife to be, Lynda, who is a solicitor and commutes to Birmingham every day.

Recreation

I am an enthusiastic sportsman and played rugby at club level before injury forced me to retire in my late twenties. I also have a keen interest in skiing, scuba diving and mountain biking. After experimenting with other sports after my rugby injury, I rediscovered horse riding again. Which was something I did as a child/in my early teens. Horses are now my passion, something I enjoy with Lynda. As well as competing regularly at affiliated level in dressage and show-jumping.

Business Career:

The Start

In 1991 I entered the family agricultural merchanting business. I sold animal feed and fertilisers to farmers in Mid Wales before deciding to join the very small subsidiary landscape business. I went on to grow that then small garden landscape business from turning over £60K - £450K over a 3 year period. At that point bought the business from the family.

The Managing Director

During my time as Managing Director I developed the company into a nationwide commercial landscape construction operation with sales of £4million. The company had two regional offices and won 3 nationwide awards for projects. I developed a Blue Chip Client Base including supermarkets, hotels, fast-food restaurants and London based property developers as well as construction companies and the public sector. Our supply chain spread across Europe and we were asked to tender for work on the Olympic developments at the Greek Olympic Games.

The Business Coach

In 2003 I became a business coach and joined various business coaching organisations. Through the experience of talking to/coaching hundreds of business owners I discovered how to make any business more profitable in any industry or sector.

In September 2005 I also qualified as an NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Practitioner. This remains my favourite business skill, as whilst I can sit down with a business owner and show them how to make their business more profitable, the biggest influence on their success is "themselves". It is often a person's past experiences, unhelpful belief structures, generalisations and distortions which cause the resistance to getting what they deserve from their business.

The Entrepreneur's Coach

I decided to set up The Entrepreneur's Coach as since I had been working as a business coach with various coaching organisations I could see something was missing in what is being offered in the market place to business owners and entrepreneurs.

For some time I kept asking myself the question: “What did I need from a coach or consultant, when I was Managing Director of a business which I grew from nothing to be a nationwide player? The answer to that is simple: I needed to understand what I did not know, overcome my fears and self limiting beliefs but I also needed to apply what I knew. But interestingly enough, at the time I thought I knew it all, did not believe I had any fears or limiting beliefs and was applying everything I knew! I also needed someone who had been there, seen it and got the T-shirt.

I didn’t take kindly to ex-corporate’s trying to tell me how to run my business! I needed someone with experience to show me the tricks to make my life easier. So that is the essence of “The Entrepreneur's Coach”. My purpose is to develop entrepreneurs and give them the tools they need to avoid making mistakes.
